Beginning Algebra With Applications
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (October, 1999)
Authors: Richard N. Aufmann, Vernon C. Barker, and Joanne S. Lockwood
Average review score:

An unnecessary revision to previous editions.
This is an easy to use book, but I've checked the third and fourth editions, and except for different equations, the content is the same. My instructor said it made no difference which edition I used, so I went with the third one.

Chopin (Introducing Composers)
Published in Hardcover by Chrysalis Books (15 November, 2002)
Authors: Roland Vernon and Ian Andrew
Average review score:

A solid juvenile biography of Frederic Chopin
"Introducing Chopin" tells the story of Frederic Chopin, the outstanding pianist and brilliant composer of music for the piano who was born in 19th-century Poland but enjoyed his greatest success in Paris. Chopin's wrote pieces for the pianoforte that were sensitive, tender, amorous, lyrical and melancholy by turn, making him the main representation of the ideal of the "poet in music." In this juvenile biography Roland Vernon not only provides biographical details but also emphasizes how Chopin's music was full of strong feeling, representative of the age of the Romantics. Within that context it seems rather ironic that he should fall victim to an incurable illness.

This series looks at the influences and historical events that shaped the lives of the great composers from Bach and Beethoven to Gershwin and Stravinsky. This means that there is an emphasis on how such composers were shaped by the times in which they lived. Vernon traces how Chopin's fame grew as he moved westward from Poland, first to Vienna, then to Paris, and finally to London. These books are illustrated in full color, making use of contemporary works of art to such an extent that often the pictures threaten to overwhelm the text. The back of the volume contains a Time Chart along with a Glossary of both musical terms and other famous musicians.

Whenever young readers pick up a biography of a famous classical musician like "Introducing Chopin," I always advise that they read the book while listening to a CD of the composer's music; there are always several "greatest hits" like efforts profiling such composers. Ideally you want such books to list particular musical pieces that you can look for when you are choosing a CD or making a point of listening to particular tracks. However, this particular volume only mentions a few specific works by Chopin, which I consider something of a shortcoming.

Wacky Wit
This book is very good! I absolutely LOVED one proverb! Here it is... There's no thrill in easy sailing when the sky is clear and blue. There's no joy in merely doing things that anyone can do. But there is some fullfillment that is might sweet to take, when you reach a destination that you thought you couldn't make.

Death in Washington : the murder of Orlando Letelier

Review of "Death in Washington-The Murder..Orlando Letelier"
Well-documented, well-written book of the murder of Letelier and Moffet by a car-bombing in Washington on 9/21/76. Letelier was about to testify about the involvement of various U.S. agencies' involvement in the political environment in Chile before and during the Allende government. This book will be of particular interest to those disgusted with the American involvement in Indoensia, Iran, Guatamala, and elsewhere in the world. It's particularly sorrowing that Allende will not be put on trial, nor it seems, the parties responsible in the U.S. government for the terror and economic dislocation caused by U.S. meddling in Chile. But the book is valid, encouraging, and a superb example of how investigative reporting can cause changes for the better. We can only hope that with efforts like this will promote the ongoing legal actions against Kissinger and his trail of economic destruction around the world.

Dictionary of World War I
Published in Hardcover by DIANE Publishing Co (March, 1994)
Author: Ian Vernon Hogg
Average review score:

Excellent resource for World War I information and terms
As a reader of World War I fiction and memoirs, I found this an invaluable resource for unfamiliar terms, such as different types of weapons/equipment. This dictionary, compiled by an authority on military history and munitions, covers important people, the battles, and terms of WWI in concise, understandable terms. In additon to the 650 entries, some drawings and maps were included. While students of history may not find this book detailed enough to meet their needs, I found it a useful pocket resource.

The Erotic Imagination: French Histories of Perversity (Ideologies of Desire)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (October, 1997)
Author: Vernon A., II Rosario
Average review score:

Interesting views overweighed by technical terminologies
This book is a fascinating read as one learns about how medical journals dedicated themselves to sexual psychotic behaviors in the Napoleonic era of France. It seems that medical journals were relished by many as the pornographic/erotic material of its age. The problem though with this book is that it fails to draw any conclusions even as ot proclaims itself to be an analysis and psychological study of historical material. The writer often bogs down the writing with lots of technical writing and phrasings while often putting in repitious reportage of events. It is an interesting read for someone fascinated with either this era of history or with the evolution of psychology but more than likely will leave a cold impression on those that have only a passing interest in the material or are hoping for titulation.

The Film Criticism of Vernon Young
Published in Hardcover by University Press of America (17 August, 1990)
Authors: Vernon Young and Bert Cardullo
Average review score:

Unpopular Critic on a Popular Art
From the polite distance of his home in Sweden, the Englishman Vernon Young quietly established himself as one of the greatest critics of film during the medium's most tumultuous decades - the '60s & '70s - when the roseate promises of Truffaut, Antonioni, and Bergman went unfulfilled, to be replaced by the isolated, tenuous successes of Tavernier, Wertmuller, and (one of his own favorites) Jan Troell. Remote from the notorious in-fighting of the New York critical scene, in which Stanley Kauffmann, Pauline Kael and John Simon reduced film reviewing to a blood sport, Young commented - selectively - on a film scene which had driven some spectators away from film completely. Long out of print, his two books On Film and Cinema Borealis (his brilliant Bergman study) have finally been supplanted by this direly needed overview, gathering together his far-flung reviews in one invaluable volume. I am certain it will at last convince everyone that Young belongs on the list of film critics which includes Otis Ferguson, Robert Warshow and James Agee.
